Family Promise and PetSmart Celebrate Two Years of PetSmart Promise

PetSmart Promise, a national program that helps temporarily homeless families keep all members of their family together – including their four-legged family members - is celebrating the two-year anniversary of the program’s launch in Phoenix. PetSmart Promise builds pet kennel facilities at Family Promise Day Centers for temporarily homeless families across the United States. The concept initiated with Family Promise of Greater Phoenix in 2012, and since has expanded across the country with seven additional facilities, including five opening this year.

Cabot Creamery Continues Their Support of Family Promise

For the 2nd year in a row, Family Promise and Cabot Creamery Cooperative, “Makers of the World’s Best Cheddar,” are partnering nationally to help Affiliates raise money. The farmers who own Cabot Creamery applaud the work each Family Promise Affiliate does and are showing their appreciation by offering cheese and gift boxes as donations for Affiliate events. New Affiliates Open in Oregon and Missouri

Lincoln County Director Linda Roy and Family Advocate Julie Pearson.
We proudly welcome two new Affiliates—Family Promise of Lincoln County, Oregon, our third Affiliate in the Beaver State, and Family Promise of the Northland in Kansas City, Missouri, our very first Affiliate in the “Show Me” State.

In Lincoln County, efforts began when the homeless advocate for the school district, Hanna Connett, grappled with how to serve the hundreds of homeless children in this rural community on the dank but ruggedly beautiful Oregon coast. She connected with Donna Lawson and efforts to start the program commenced. Over time, Donna and Tom Cioffi lent a hand and Kathy Christenson did the opening training.

A Full House for the 6th Annual "Our Promise to Children" Breakfast

10-year-old Leslianys.
“Someday soon, I will have a place to call home. I am the face of Family Promise.”

So said 10-year-old Leslianys, a guest in our Union County program, at Family Promise’s 6th Annual “Our Promise to Children” Breakfast at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey on May 14. Leslianys was one of several Breakfast attendees who shared how they were involved with, and a face of, the Family Promise community.

A New Gulf Coast Affiliate

Board members Mike Bass, Deborah Humphrey and Skip Wilson cut the ribbon at the Grand Opening.
Family Promise of Greater Brandon marks our 10th Affiliate in the Sunshine State, and first in the Tampa metro area. Efforts began with a volunteer who knew of the program and wanted to bring it to his home city, a bedroom community east of Tampa. Two years ago, the board coalesced and, under Donna Watson Lawson’s guidance, put together an aggressive plan toward opening.

Welcome Genesee County

Jim Hall presents Board members Diana Snider and Michelle Traynor with the keys to their new van.
Genesee County is the home of Flint, MI, about 60 miles north of Detroit. This marks the 5th Affiliate started in the state of Michigan. The need for the program is well-illustrated by Flint’s perpetual appearance on multiple lists of the most troubled cities in America. As shelter providers in Genesee County note, at any given time, Flint’s homeless population is about 3,000, yet there are less than 200 beds available.

Affiliates Go Above and Beyond During Winter Storms

Last week's storm covered Atlanta with a sheet of ice.
In much of the country the winter of 2014 has tested people in ways they’d like to forget. From Michigan to Maine and up and down the East Coast, the severe weather has produced extraordinary challenges for Family Promise families, volunteers and staff – and produced acts of selflessness and near-heroism.

Welcome New Affiliates in New Jersey and Georgia

Camilla Worrell surrounded by her Board.
Passaic County is in northern New Jersey and had had a program that closed about a decade ago. Cobb County is the northwest suburb of Atlanta. This gives New Jersey its 17th Affiliate, padding its lead as the state with the most Affiliates. The Peach State is climbing up the ranks; with 12 Affiliates, it ties Pennsylvania for third place.

We Welcome a New Wisconsin Affiliate

Board member Kim Lopez

Jefferson County marks the 7th Affiliate in the state of Wisconsin. The county sits in southeastern Wisconsin, between Madison and Milwaukee, and is mostly rural. There are no family shelters in this county of more than 80,000. Efforts began when John Woodbury went to visit the training taking place in Washington County. He had heard about the program and was intrigued, but went up thinking that Family Promise probably was not right for Jefferson County. He came back on a mission that culminated with their opening right after Thanksgiving, with John as the board chair.
